What Illness Cost Me

When people think about illness, they often think about symptoms.

The pain.

The medications.

The procedures.

But illness costs more than that.

It costs opportunities.

It costs confidence.

It costs time.

It costs energy.

Sometimes it costs relationships.

Sometimes it costs dreams.

I missed events I wanted to attend.

Opportunities I wanted to pursue.

Moments I can never get back.

There were days when illness felt like a thief.

Stealing pieces of life I had expected to enjoy.

Yet illness also gave me something.

Perspective.

Empathy.

Purpose.

It taught me what truly matters.

It taught me to value health.

To cherish relationships.

To appreciate ordinary days.

The cost was significant.

But so were the lessons.

And today, I choose to focus not only on what illness took from me, but on what it taught me.

Because sometimes our greatest struggles become our greatest teachers.
