Choosing Between Food and Treatment

The doctor prescribed medication.

The pharmacist explained how to take it.

The treatment plan was clear.

The problem was not understanding what needed to be done.

The problem was paying for it.

At home, she spread her bills across the table.

Rent.

School fees.

Electricity.

Food.

Transportation.

Medication.

There was not enough money for everything.

Something had to give.

And once again, her health was pushed to the bottom of the list.

It was not because she did not care about herself.

It was because she cared about everyone else.

Like many women, she had become accustomed to sacrifice.

She sacrificed comfort.

She sacrificed rest.

Now she was sacrificing treatment.

Across Africa and around the world, countless women face similar choices every day.

Not because healthcare is unavailable.

But because it is unaffordable.

No woman should have to choose between feeding her family and preserving her health. Healthcare is not a luxury. It is a necessity.

And access to treatment should never depend on the size of a woman's bank account.
